The Dharavi Redevelopment Project, a massive undertaking aimed at transforming Mumbai’s largest slum, has encountered a new obstacle.

Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL), the special purpose vehicle managing the project, has requested a 15-acre plot of land from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on a five-year lease.

This request for land in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), formerly occupied by a casting yard, has raised concerns about potential delays and complications in the project. DRPPL justifies their demand by stating the need for temporary shelters to house residents during construction.

History of Land Issues in Dharavi Redevelopment

This is not the first time land issues have emerged as a challenge for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. Previously, unidentified land parcels were discovered within existing mall properties, necessitating adjustments. Additionally, there have been instances where land earmarked for the project has been allocated for other purposes.

Concerns Regarding Adani Group’s Demands

The Adani Group, leading the redevelopment efforts, has faced criticism for their evolving demands.

Some view the request for 15 acres in BKC, along with the need for storage space for heavy machinery, as signs of a project potentially becoming more complex and expensive than initially anticipated.

The impact of DRPPL’s land request on the project timeline and overall feasibility remains to be seen. It is crucial for all stakeholders involved to work collaboratively to ensure a smooth and successful redevelopment process that benefits the residents of Dharavi.
